- Low folate levels can lead to certain types of anemia. Conditions that can cause low folate levels include poor diet, pregnancy, liver disease, certain stomach/intestinal problems, kidney dialysis, among others. Women of childbearing age should receive adequate amounts of folic acid either through their diet or supplements to prevent infant spinal cord birth defects.
- More than men, women in their early 20s to mid-40s are more likely to have deficiencies of these key B vitamins. Women with these vitamin deficiencies are at a higher risk of giving birth to a child with neural tube defects, or malformations in the brain and spine. That's why it is crucial for women in this age group to make sure they are getting at least 400 micrograms of folate daily and, if possible, up to 1,000 micrograms.
